Dance the winter blues away in the WinterDance Festival, held in Charlottetown Feb. 28-29.

The School of Performing Arts, a partnership between the Confederation Centre of the Arts and Holland College, is running series of dance masterclasses and performances.

Guest artists include Eldiyar Daniyarov, Sion Irwin-Childs, Claire Newbery and Dawn Ward. The talented performers from across Canada will guide dancers through a series of workshops that will hone dance skills.

A public performance at the Florence Simmons Performance Hall in Holland College, admission by donation, will be offered on Saturday at 3 p.m, Feb. 29.

Peggy Redding, the Centre's director of arts education, said this initiative is a community-builder for dance on P.E.I.

“(This is) an alternative to competition-based dancing events. WinterDance celebrates and enjoys the art of dance for its own sake.”

During the two-day series, professional ballet dancer Daniyarov will share his extensive experience; Irwin-Childs will focus on instilling dancers with confidence in their choreography and Ward will bring Afro-Jazz influences in her masterclasses.

Newbery is a graduate of the School of Performing Arts, who is continuing her studies at Concordia University. She will guide senior level students through improvisation.

These programs are for dance students over the age of nine.
