Custodian Sharon Gordon, who works at Southern Kings Consolidated School, is the recipient of a Prince Edward Island Home and School Federation's Extra Mile Award for 2021.
The award was presented on Feb. 10 at the school by Heather Mullen, president of the P.E.I. Home and School Federation. Norbert Carpenter, director, Public Schools Branch, along with co-workers, parents and Gordon’s family members, including three grandchildren, were all present to celebrate with her.
“I thank God for my job, my family who are my rock, school staff, including Southern Kings school's administrative support person, principal John and all the wonderful principals that I've worked with over the past 16 years, teachers, co-workers and to the Home and School volunteers,” said Gordon.
In the citation, Gordon was described as a conscientious, hard-working member of the Southern Kings Consolidated School team who truly cares about her job, her co-workers and all the students in the school.
“She has been at this school for several years and takes pride in her daily routines, wanting to ensure the school is welcoming to community members, parents and students,” read the citation. “People feel better about coming to work and learn in this school because one person actively engages in creating a loving, caring space at SKC.”
A positive role model for students, Gordon does much more than her regular duties, including decorating the school for the holiday season and helping with the school lunch program. Her efforts are also appreciated by parents as she knows every student by name and greets all ages with a smile.
This year has been especially hard with extra COVID-19 cleaning protocols, but Gordon continues to keep the school clean and always with a smile on her face.
In addition, Gordon, who is a wonderful cook, has found time to supply the SKC school staff with meals and treats.

- The award, initiated in 2004-2005, recognizes any school staff person such as a teacher, administrator, youth worker, administrative assistant, education assistant or custodian who exemplifies going the extra mile – over and above the call of duty.
