CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — The Chaisson Trio with Kevin Chaisson, Rannie MacLellan and Louise Chaisson-MacKinnon will perform at the ceilidh on Friday, Sept. 18, in the Katherine Hughes Memorial Hall at the Irish Cultural Centre.

There will be a 50/50 draw during the evening at the wheelchair accessible, air-conditioned hall and licensed hall. A light lunch is served during the intermission. Admission is at the door.

Everyone is welcome. For more information call 902-213-3924.

Chaisson, a piano player from Bear River, has deep roots in traditional music on Prince Edward Island. The Chaisson family has been influential in keeping traditional fiddling alive in this province, and family members operate the Rollo Bay Fiddle Festival each year. Some  Chaisson family members represent Prince Edward Island on the international music stage, most notably Kevin’s son, Tim, in the East Pointers.

MacLellan, the fiddle player in the group, is from Margaree, Cape Breton. His signature rhythmic strathspeys and lively reels are a highlight of the ceilidh, showcasing the Cape Breton style of fiddling inspired by various fiddlers such as the late Jerry Holland, his good friend. He acquired the fiddle that he still plays today from Holland. Well-versed fiddle fans will know that Cape

Breton fiddler Brenda Stubbert wrote a tune in honour of MacLellan called Rannie MacLellan’s Reel.

Chaisson-MacKinnon, the vocalist of the group, has a soulful voice and a large repertoire of lively Maritime songs.

The group’s offerings include medleys of Scottish and Irish jigs and reels, beautiful strathspeys, and lovely slow airs, mixed with traditional ballads.

Expect a fast-paced night with a mix of old songs and new, all coming from a love of Island traditions. The Chaisson Trio has been performing on the BIS stage for more than 30 years and is one of the most popular groups who plays the BIS.
