SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — Whether it’s winter boots, a picture to hang on an empty wall or a book to read on a wintery night, a store in Summerside is ensuring everyone gets to open a gift on Christmas Day.
Kids flocked to the Free Store in Summerside on Saturday morning, patiently waiting their turn in the parking lot opposite 109 Water Street, to secretly shop for parents or caregivers with just one twist – no money changes hands.
Trecia Graham, a volunteer at the store and parent, said the Christmas Shopping Party is a positive experience that leaves judgment outside the door while bringing unexpected cheer to many.
“My family came to P.E.I. for a better life, future and education for our kids. We’ve lived in Summerside now for three years, but coming from Jamaica, this Christmas Shopping Party where kids get gifts for their parents – for free – is something unexpected and wonderful.
“When you immigrate to a new country there’s costly lawyer fees, other expenses, and it all adds up. Everything the lawyer does comes at a high cost, and when you have a family to feed and other expenses it doesn’t leave much in the pocket for gifts,” said Graham while helping kids choose items in the space that resembled a department store.
“Being a volunteer for this event is a dream, and I want to say to Belinda (Woods), the organizer, ‘God has placed you here for a reason’. She is doing a wonderful job and I lift my hat to her. I hope other people follow in her footsteps when she eventually retires – to keep on the good work,” she said.
Belinda Woods, the operator of the store, said there’s been an outpouring of support from the community.
“It’s so exciting. It’s been 30 minutes since opening our doors and 40 children have already walked through and left with wrapped gifts. There’s still a long line outside, and all these kids are excited," she said.
"Plus, we have lots of volunteers to help.”
After watching 200 kids come to shop, Woods has decided to host the same event next year.
She thanked local businesses, volunteers and the community for the generous support.
“We are pretty blessed in Summerside,” said Woods.
