Charlottetown’s bar scene is sleeping, but a few Islanders want to shock it back to life with electronic music.

Dexter Shea is one of them and he has a plan.

“I’m trying to grow the electronic music scene in Charlottetown," he said. "After spending six years in Halifax, I feel there’s a lot of room to grow the scene in the city.”

Shea, or Dekz as he is known on stage, is a DJ and producer from Tignish, P.E.I. He and others are trying to electrify the nightlife in Charlottetown.

“We want to bring back the funky atmosphere of the past and bring people together with new and exciting genres of music," said Shea.

He has been involved in numerous events around Charlottetown over the past year, where he is seeing the electronic music scene grow.

“I meet a lot of people out at every show" he said. "It’s great to see all the new faces. It’s really about creating awareness and showing people there are different genres of music out there.”

Recruiting DJs from all across the country, Shea has been bringing award-winning talent to Charlottetown.  He has been putting on a monthly electronic showcase called Future Funk. The next event is tomorrow, Oct.24 at Hunter’s Ale House.

Helping Shea is Landon Harris, or Lando as he is known on stage, one of the local DJs who will be playing this weekend.

Mitchell Pineo, a 2014 ECMA award winner, will be performing as half of the duo Pineo and Loeb.

Pineo is coming off of a year that saw him win that 2014 ECMA award for electronic recording of the year.

Last year Pineo toured the Maritimes and Nepal with DJ and friend JR Loeb.  The duo has a unique set when it comes to electronic music, incorporating a live band into the show.

“This year has been a lot more than we could have ever expected," said Pineo. "We’ve been writing tons of music; an original album, loads of remixes, including a classic rock remix album."

Pineo and Loeb were in Nepal during the devastated earthquakes that rocked the region.

“The days before the earthquake were some of the most eye opening and rewarding experiences for me culturally and spiritually," he said.

Following the earthquake the duo realized the magnitude of the destruction so they volunteered and asked friends on Facebook to send money to support relief efforts.

“It still feels like a bad dream, looking back on it, but we walked away with a newfound perspective and appreciation for life,” said Pineo.
