It’s safe to say I feel the same way when it comes to spaces in my home — mainly because I’m constantly seeking inspiration to try new things.

In particular, I feel (ahem ... felt) that way about my master bathroom. It was one room into which I had no idea how to incorporate decor and, well, I had my opinions about it.

Let’s break it down

Don’t get me wrong, I know how fortunate I am to have a home of my own and the ability to decorate and make it a cosy space for my partner and me. That said, there was one item in particular I wasn’t happy about.

Right now, the master bath is the same soft blue as the living room. The cabinets are the same dark wood as my kitchen — but far more scratched and stained. That’s the thing I wasn’t too happy with.

The toilet is behind the door and the jet tub next to the toilet. The closet is in the corner next to the countertop. (Closets are scary places — stay with me, I’ll get there.)

The cabinets

Like I said, the cabinets weren’t my favourite thing, especially given their state. While I love how white marble/granite countertop and white cabinet jibe to brighten up a space, I don’t love the cost that comes with replacing them. (More on the countertop bit ... another project is brewing.)

I thought I’d try painting my cabinets with the leftover white chalk paint I had from a previous DIY. I washed down the wood, grabbed a brush and got to work on the trim of each cabinet door and drawer face.

Then I painted the rest of the doors and faces. Once dry, I had to decide if I wanted to keep the worn-wood look I liked or find an off-white colour to better match the countertops and flooring. I went with the latter.

I put a clear gloss on top to protect it from dirt and water. I found statement door knobs for the two doors and then six crystal-like knobs for the drawers.

Decor

I had a solitary picture of me and my partner hanging on the master bath wall. Knowing I wanted something more, I was actively looking for that piece — or those pieces — to make the difference. We’re not ones to put lovey-dovey messages out there all over our house — no judgment if you are that person — but I thought the perfect spot for some sweet-messaged wall art was our private bathroom. Now I’ve got two new pieces that complement each other and the photo of me and him. I also added a sleek black-matte, metal toilet paper holder that works well with the countertop, as well as a blue-and-cream-striped rug to add texture.

Organizing the linens

I literally went on a folding spree and tidied up all the sheets and blankets so it didn’t look like an incoming avalanche every time I opened the door. My nanny always used to tell me everything has a place and everything should be in its place. I’m not the best at following this mantra, but I’m trying.

So home buddies, how does your master bathroom shape up? I don’t know if I’m quite finished with my space. I’m on the lookout for a small, mid-century modern stool to go next to the tub to put some bits and bobs on display.

Now, time to buckle up and stay home.
