CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — For anyone who hasn’t heard, we’re moving to a beautiful new library. The Confederation Centre Public Library will become the Charlottetown Library Learning Centre, located in the Dominion Building on Queen Street. But don’t change your Google maps setting yet — the anticipated opening date is next summer.

The summer is coming to a close and with that comes the Friends of the Confederation Centre Public Library’s annual Fall Book Sale, from Sept. 27 at 9:30 a.m. to Sept. 29 at 3 p.m.

Cookbooks, history, how-to, novels, kid’s stuff and even DVDs will be on offer with all proceeds supporting library programs and equipment.

Also, the Cornwall Public Library (located in the town hall) is having its annual Giant Book Sale on Sept. 27, noon to 5 p.m., and Sept. 28, 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

The children’s library is back to regular fall programming. For the youngest library lovers, on Thursdays at 1:30 p.m., there’s Wiggle, Giggle, Read. Toddler Time is at 10:30 a.m. on Thursdays, and Family Storytime for ages 3-5 (and their grownups) is Tuesdays, 3:30 p.m., and Wednesdays, 11 a.m.

Puppet drama for the little ones is Oct. 16, 10:30 a.m. with “The Gruffalo” and “What’s Inside this Box?”  On Fridays, there’s a new program — Family Game Time at 11 a.m. Get unplugged, play a game and make some new friends. On Oct. 15, 6 p.m., there will be bedtime stories. Bring a stuffy and a grown-up, wear pajamas and head to the library to hear a bedtime story or two.

Lego Club is Sundays, 2 p.m. On Sept. 27 at 2 p.m. there is PD day fun with Marvelasy Construction for ages 5-12. Craft Club is Oct. 1, 6 p.m., and Spy Academy is Oct. 11, 2 p.m. (another PD day) for ages 5-12.  Registration is required so make a covert, cloaked, conspiratorial call at 902-368-4644.

On Sept. 24, 6:30 p.m., the library is hosting Jaime Lee Mann as she launches the final book in the Legend of Rhyme series — “Ancient Fall”. The Bookmark will be on hand to sell books.

For teens, the popular Drop-in Drawing program continues on Saturdays, 1:30 p.m. On Sept. 21 at 2 p.m., drop in to decorate a pot and plant a succulent (supplies and succulent provided).

Anyone interested in giving advice and helping out as a volunteer can join the Teen Advisory Group. The next meeting is Oct. 10 at 4 p.m.

For adult programming, on Sept. 19, 2 p.m., Canadian Blood Services is providing information about blood types and offering a chance to find out what type of blood you’re carrying around with you.

Another round of computer skills for seniors, a six-week course that pairs teens and seniors for computer, phone and tablet help, starts Sept. 25 and runs on Wednesdays at 4 p.m. There are still spaces available, so call 902-368-4642 to register.

The P.E.I. Writers’ Guild will be hosting a Write In at the library on Oct. 1, 6:30 p.m.

Starting Oct. 2 at 6:30 p.m. and continuing the first Monday of each month Stitches—A Fibre Art Club is planned. Drop in with a project. Then on Oct. 16, 6:30 p.m., it’s Craft or Fail. Check in later in the month for an update.

The library will be closed on Oct. 14 for Thanksgiving, and while I am thankful for working at the library, I’m also thankful that everyone came through Dorian safely. Remember that hurricane season runs to the end of November and while we don’t have chips, the library has enough books, magazines and DVDs to outlast any storm. And for those who want to prepare for a power outage – perhaps try “Power from the Sun:  A Practical Guide to Solar Electricity or Install Your Own Solar Panels” or “The Self Sufficient Life and How to Live it” (how to make your own power and how to grow chickens all in one book).

Beth Clinton is the regional librarian with the P.E.I. Provincial Library Service. Her column appears in The Guardian once a month. Anyone who would like more information on programs should call the library at 902-368-4642.
