It turns out Harley Quinn doesn’t need the Joker to have a good time.

The first full-length trailer for Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) dropped Tuesday going heavy on the action sequences and the humour.

Centring on Margot Robbie reprising her role as Harley Quinn from 2016’s Suicide Squad, the spinoff features new DC antiheroes — including Mary Elizabeth Winstead’s Huntress, Jurnee Smollett-Bell’s Black Canary and Rosie Perez’s Renee Montoya — going up against Ewan McGregor’s crime lord Roman Sionis (aka Black Mask) and Chris Messina‘s villainous Victor Zsasz in a bid to protect Ella Jay Basco’s Cassandra Cain.

The new film, still set inside DC’s Extended Universe slate of titles that include Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Shazam! and Man of Steel, is directed by Cathy Yan and, if the trailer is any indication, the storyline will be more about the “Fantabulous Emancipation” of Harley Quinn and slightly less focused on the “Birds of Prey.”

“The Joker and I, broke up,” she says, before hurling a knife into a caricature drawing of his face. So she looks for a fresh start in Gotham City, but it turns out she “isn’t the only dame in Gotham looking for emancipation.”

Set to Edith Piaf’s Hymne A L’amour , the trailer teases a peppier, brighter DC film that bursts with action.

But one thing is for certain — this “harlequin” doesn’t need a man to make her happy.

“I’m the one they should be scared of,” Robbie’s Harley says. “Not you and not Mister J. Because I’m Harley freakin’ Quinn.”

Oh, and if you’re addressing her, never call her “chick.”

“I’ll except broad, lady, woman and, on occasion, bitch,” she says.

Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) opens Feb. 7, 2020.
