Artist, singer and activist Yoko Ono is asking women to “send a testament of harm done to you for being a woman” as part of an installation to be exhibited at Contemporary Calgary this fall.
The call for submissions, which is open to women of all ages and from all countries, is part of Ono’s Arising, an ongoing installation that will be exhibited around the world. It’s also part of her Growing Freedom exhibit, which will run from Sept. 10 to Jan. 31 at Contemporary Calgary.
Participants are invited to write the testament “in your own language, in your own words, and write however openly you wish.” Submissions may include a first name but not a full name. Participants are also asked to send a photograph of their eyes.
Ono first put out the call in 2013 for the ongoing project. The deadline for submissions is open.
Ono’s Growing Freedom was initially meant to open in May but the pandemic pushed Contemporary Calgary’s opening spring season to the fall. The two-part exhibition explores various facets of the pioneering conceptual artist’s work from the past 50 years. The exhibit will also feature the collaborative projects between Ono and husband John Lennon. These works were part of the peace activism the couple took part in during the 1960s and 1970s.
