Event also featured P.E.I. 4-Hers taking part in Canadian 4-H Dairy Classic
Two familiar names in the Island’s dairy industry exhibited some of their best products recently at this year’s Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto.
Cows Creamery and ADL both had strong placings in the competitive dairy products show.
In the class for unsalted butter, Cows took top prize, winning the red ribbon. ADL placed fourth and fifth with its entries in the salted butter class.
For its efforts in the cultured butter class, Cows placed third.
Cheese entries exhibited by ADL placed well in the competition — mild cheddar, fourth and sixth; medium cheddar, eighth; extra old cheddar, sixth and seventh; and, aged cheddar, ninth and 11th.
The Canadian 4-H Dairy Classic featured more than 300 exhibitors and their animals at the fair.
Eight P.E.I. 4-H members made the trip to Ontario and walked away with some impressive placintgs.
In junior showmanship, Porter Weeks came out of the ring with the first-place ribbon after defeating a large group in his age bracket. Making it past the first cut of competition in the same age division was Tina Spek.
Kyle Bouma’s showmanship skills earned him an 11th placing in senior showmanship.
But the big news of the show for the P.E.I. team came out of the conformation classes.
Bouma’s Holstein summer yearling, Garden-State Airlift Expose received honourable mention, making it the third best animal in the classic.
Hi-Calibre Goldchip Ariel, a Holstein senior calf show by Weeks, was selected first in its class.
Extondale Mafia Felecia made it through to the second round of competition in her class. The heifer was shown in the Holstein intermediate calf class. It was exhibited by Ella MacPherson.
At the end of the day, each competing team brought their best groups of three into the ring for judging. The Island team placed second.
Other 4-H participants from the Island taking part in the show included Jamie Hughes, Grace Hughes, Katie Hughes and Kirsten Kouwenberg.
