CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — The Charlottetown Legion Choir will be performing a concert May 26 at St. Joachim’s Church, Vernon River, and again at St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Charlottetown on May 28.
The May 26 concert begins at 3 p.m. (doors open at 2:30 p.m.), and the May 28 concert gets underway at 7:30 p.m., with doors opening at 7 p.m.
For the concerts, the Charlottetown Legion Choir is teaming with The Amabile Singers to perform “Songs of Love - With Strings Attached”.
The power and subtlety of over 50 choristers’ voices will be joined at times by violin and string quartet to sing about love of country and home, love of God and love of others – important things to which everyone has strings attached.
Tasty refreshments will be provided by choir members at the end of the concert and are included in the admission price. Tickets are $10 cash in advance from choir members or $12 at the door ($8 for veterans and spouses). Advance purchased tickets may be used at either location.
Conductor Travis Boudreau, accompanist Leo Marchildon and the group’s singers are noted for impressing audiences with the accessibility, scope and versatility of their music.
Expect fresh interpretations of traditional Celtic favourites “Loch Lomond”, “Carrick Fergus” and “The Parting Glass”. Also featured will be an Appalachian folk song “Bright Morning Star”, a medley of Hebrew love songs, and a lovely hymn “Ancient Words”. Several pieces will be performed with voices only, no accompaniment.
The Charlottetown Legion Choir is a spirited community-based ensemble. With a 56-year history, it the oldest Legion-affiliated choir in Canada. Founded as an all-male chorus in 1963, women were invited to join in 1973. Participants now come from all sectors of the community while continuing the choir’s proud history of affiliation with the Charlottetown Legion, notably performing at Remembrance Day celebrations. Feature events for the choir are its annual Christmas and spring concerts. Rehearsals are held weekly at Stone Park Intermediate School, Charlottetown between September and May.
The Amabile Singers choir is one of Atlantic Canada’s vibrant chamber ensembles. Based in Prince Edward Island, conductor Boudreau and the group’s 20 singers are noted for impressing audiences with the quality, depth and range of their music. Singing Bach to Britten, medieval to modern, classics to classical and much that is found between, this small choir of enthusiasts loves to sing. With a passion and desire to perform with excellence, the choir seeks out new music, composers/arrangers, performing venues and singers of like mind. The choir welcome new voices.
