Elliot Page is ending his three-year marriage to Canadian dancer and choreographer Emma Portner.

Celebrity news site TMZ reported on Tuesday afternoon that the Halifax-born actor and activist had filed for divorce in Manhattan, seeking to dissolve the marriage that began around January, 2018.

Page announced their marriage with an Instagram post displaying their rings on Jan. 3, 2018, and they frequently shared moments from their travels and time together on the social media platform.

News of the divorce comes less than two months after Page announced he was transgender with an impassioned statement on Dec. 1. At the time, Portner reposted the message with a statement of support for her partner, saying “I am so proud of @elliotpage. Trans, queer and non-binary people are a gift to this world.”

The Ottawa-born artist also asked for patience and privacy from their fans and followers, “but that you join me in the fervent support of trans life every single day. Elliot’s existence is a gift in and of itself. Shine on sweet E. Love you so much.”

Portner’s work includes choreographing videos for Canadian pop star Justin Bieber and U.S. singer-songwriter Maggie Rogers. She is also an instructor in contemporary jazz at New York’s Broadway Dance Centre, where she encourages her students in “exploring, sharing and pushing boundaries.”

Page has most recently been seen in the popular Netflix superhero series The Umbrella Academy, which was recently renewed for a third season. In 2019, the Academy Award-nominated actor also expanded his role as a producer and filmmaker with the documentary There’s Something in the Water, bringing to light examples of environmental racism in Nova Scotian BIPOC communities.

Around the time of his announcement in December, Page was also beginning production in Toronto on the new BuzzFeed Studios film 1UP, set in the world of eSports. Directed by Kyle Newman, the story by Julia Yorks concerns a young college student (Paris Berelc) who forms an all-female team to tackle misogyny in gaming and recruits a mysterious coach played by Page to get them into shape.
