Voter turnout in advance polling over the long weekend was up compared with the last federal election, according to Elections Canada.

Preliminary figures indicate some 4,700,000 electors voted at the advance polls over four days in Canada, said the chief electoral officer, Stéphane Perrault.

This is a 29 per cent increase from the 3,657,415 electors who voted in advance in the 2015 general election.

The numbers are estimates, and not all polls have reported yet. A breakdown of voter turnout for British Columbia is expected later today.

Advance polls were open from Friday to Monday, and, for the first time, for 12 hours each day from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Voting takes place for the federal election on Oct. 21.
