Charlottetown will host Acadian Day at the Fair during Old Home Week as part of the 2019 World Acadian Congress celebrations.
The World Acadian Congress takes place every five years to celebrate Acadian culture and bring Acadian communities together to strengthen ties. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the event, and communities are hosting celebrations throughout the host region of Prince Edward Island and Southeastern New Brunswick.
Charlottetown will serve as one of the host municipalities for the event, known in French as Congrès Mondial acadien, with activities taking place on Monday, Aug. 12.
“It’s a great honour for us to serve as a host municipality for Congrès mondial acadien 2019 and offer a full day of activities in celebration of Acadian culture,” said Charlottetown Mayor Philip Brown.
Acadian Day at the Fair kicks off Aug. 12 with family focused entertainment from noon to 4:30 p.m., featuring musician and storyteller Michael Pendergast, interactive performances by Carnaval en Promenade and story time for children.
A Maritime Kitchen Party, featuring P.E.I. native Jonathan Arsenault, East Coast Music Award-winning roots artist Meaghan Blanchard, Nova Scotia traditional and electronic band Comté de Clare and Juno-nominated singer-songwriter Lennie Gallant will begin at 6 p.m.
“We’re so fortunate to have such a great lineup of musicians and performers, all of whom have strong Acadian ties or backgrounds,” said Coun. Kevin Ramsay, chairman of the city’s economic development, tourism and events management committee.
“It’s going to be a great day of celebrations, and what better time than during the week of National Acadian Day and Old Home Week.”
Throughout the day on Aug. 12, the public is invited to stroll through Artisan Alley, an Acadian-themed artisan market, and watch the creation of an Acadian-themed sand sculpture. Participants can also enjoy Acadian cuisine at Top of the Park Restaurant at the Red Shores Racetrack and Casino (reservations recommended) and cheer on the horses during a featured harness race presented by CMA 2019 and Charlottetown.
