The PEIWI board awarded scholarships within the past few weeks and is now gearing up for a busy summer with preparations for the annual Handcraft, Horticulture and Arts Show during Old Home Week.

Plans for fall events are also well underway.

The PEIWI Education Scholarship for 2018 was awarded to Jessica VanEwyk from Bonshaw who is enrolled at the University of Prince Edward Island. The Louise MacMillan Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Robert Larson from Borden-Carleton, and he is enrolled at Dalhousie University. The board extends best wishes to both winners and all applicants in their continued studies.

The P.E.I. Women’s Institute reminds all students there are several scholarships offered throughout the year. The next opportunity is for the Helen Herring Scholarship for students entering their third year of university. The deadline is Sept. 30, and details are available online at www.peiwi.ca.

Speaking of deadlines, Old Home Week is slated for Aug. 9-18 and Islanders are invited to submit entries to the WI’s Handcraft, Horticulture and Art Show. Various classes in art, crafts, food, flowers, photography and vegetables can be entered, and items will be on display during the provincial exhibition. The deadline to register is July 20. Additional details are online at www.peiwi.ca.

The P.E.I. Women's Institute is once again offering demonstrations during Old Home Week on flower arranging, wooden welcome signs, wooden flowers, hair-braiding technique, recycling plastic bags, teddy bears, rug hooking, quilling, painting, glass-etching, wood carving, corn husk dolls, quilting and applique. Demonstrations will be offered twice daily.

Volunteers are still needed for this year’s Handcraft, Horticulture and Art Show of Old Home Week. Anyone interested, including students, are invited to participate during scheduled times. Students needing volunteers hours are encouraged to sign up. Contact Anna Cooper at 902-370-1818.

A variety of themes will be part of this year's fall workshops, including a session with Norma Pasatieri on Resolutions and Robert’s Rules of Order; Lieut.-Col. Trevor Campbell from the Veterans Affairs Canada and a food-related demonstration with Joan Leitch. The workshops will be offered at different times for each location and are scheduled for Oct. 17 in Summerside, Oct. 23 in Charlottetown and Oct. 25 in Montague. Pre-registration will be required.
