SYDNEY, N.S. — Cape Breton is the No. 1 island in North America, according to readers of Condé Nast Traveler, a luxury and lifestyle magazine.
“We are thrilled that Cape Breton Island continues to receive such amazing recognition,” said Terry Smith, CEO of Destination Cape Breton, in a news release.
“This is a strong sign that our destination is still on the bucket list of many, which will help our industry rebound post-pandemic.”
In the survey, Cape Breton was referred to as "a rocky, rugged island begging to be hiked."
The Cabot Trail, the island’s fall foliage and multiple species of whales that can be spotted along the coast were among other aspects of the island noted in the online article.
Prince Edward Island was rated the No. 4 best island in North America in the same survey, while Vancouver Island was rated No. 2. Two islands off Mexico rounded out the top five.
The Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards are considered the longest-running and a prestigious recognition of excellence in the travel industry, according to a news release from Destination Cape Breton.
This edition of the survey was conducted at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic and saw more than 715,000 readers asked to rate their travel experiences across the globe.
