Sunwing is offering up its available seats free of charge to stranded Canadians to return home amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The airline announced it was opening up free seats on its repatriation flights from southern destinations to Canadian and Canadian permanent residents on its website Thursday.

"We understand a lot of Canadians are still stranded outside the country and struggling to get home," Stephen Hunter, CEO of Sunwing Travel Group, said.

"That's why we want to open up any extra capacity we have. It's the Canadian thing to do."

The measure comes after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called for all Canadians abroad to return home as borders continued to close.

Sunwing anticipates it will operate close to 400 flights that will close more than $26 million "at no extra cost to the customer."

As of Thursday, the company brought more than 33,000 Canadians back from southern destinations on its repatriated flights.

The company has suspended all southbound flights from March 17 to April 9 in light of the COVID-19 outbreak.
