Cineplex and Landmark Cinemas are temporarily closing all of its theatres nationwide as as COVID-19 continues to spread.
All 165 of Cineplex’s Canadian theatres, including six in Edmonton and one in Sherwood Park, will be closed until April 2, the company announced online Monday.
The company had previously put social distancing policies in place and improved cleaning protocols.
“Based on the publicly stated guidance from multiple public health authorities, including recent government directives and the escalating dangers of community spread, we are temporarily closing our network of entertainment venues,” wrote Ellis Jacob, president and CEO of Cineplex, in an online statement.
Edmonton’s two Rec Room locations will also be closed, Cineplex announced.
Any previous bookings or reservations will be cancelled and fully refunded, including bookings at Rec Rooms and Playdiums.
“We greatly appreciate your understanding and look forward to welcoming you back soon. Until then, please be well and take care of yourselves,” wrote Jacob.
Landmark Cinemas, which owns the theatre in Edmonton’s City Centre mall, announced Monday it would be closing all of its locations once scheduled showtimes finished for the night. A statement posted to the company’s website did not say when they would re-open.
“We ask that you take care of yourselves, your families, and each other during these uncertain times. We look forward to welcoming you back soon,” read the statement.
Tickets already purchased would be refunded, the statement read. The company asked for customers to allow a minimum of four weeks for refunds to be processed.
Anyone who purchased tickets online with a voucher from Costco, Calgary Co-op or AMA will receive a new voucher.
