Construction underway on 50-acre retirement village in Clarenville

Heavy equipment is busy moving earth on a massive construction site while workers put up walls and buildings take shape.

A village for older adults and seniors is being built on 50 acres of land in the middle of Clarenville.

It’s been three years since the project was first officially announced on a Facebook Page, “Clarenville Seniors Village.”

Real estate developer Kevin King is the man behind this project, but he declined to offer comment.

Instead, a representative from his company, Shoal Investments, directed media to Rod Murphy, who will handle rental of the units once the project is completed.

Murphy told SaltWire Network the project is providing employment to about 20 to 30 people right now.

The aim is to construct the shells of the buildings before winter sets in, he said.

“They’re also putting in the roads and water and sewer lines right now,” he said.

Once the buildings are enclosed, he said, work will continue through the winter on the interiors.

Murphy said there are no details available on how many, or what kind, of apartments will make up the village.

He did say, however, “This is not just seniors' apartments. It will be a lifetyle village for adults.”

The initial plans indicated the complex would include things like a community centre, games room and a woodworking shop. Murphy said those things are still part of the plan.

He said the project should be finished by the summer of 2021.
