CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. - Peoples Jewellers in the Charlottetown Mall will close July 21, leaving customers to find alternatives to in-store services, such as driving to New Brunswick or shipping items off-Island.
Frank Cirillo, director of public relations for the store’s owner, Signet Jewelers in Ohio, said in an email that the referral store for the closing Charlottetown location is the Peoples Jewellers in the Champlain Place Shopping Centre in Dieppe, N.B., near Moncton.
The drive to Moncton from Charlottetown is approximately two hours, one way. As well, the toll for the Confederation Bridge for a standard, two-axle vehicle is $47.
Cirillo said there are other options if travelling to New Brunswick isn’t convenient. He explained that customers can visit any local jeweler for documented warranty inspections. The inspection will be honoured by the company to keep the warranty current, he said.
If service is needed, customers can also contact the company to have merchandise sent to a design and service centre. Cirillo said shipping costs will be reimbursed.
A supervisor at the Charlottetown location declined to comment this week on the closure.
Cirillo also didn’t explain why the store was closing.
In October, Mappins – another jewelry store in the Charlottetown Mall owned by Signet Jewelers - also closed. At that time, Cirillo advised customers needing service to visit Peoples across the aisle.
