The Outbacks and Crosstreks are coming to Charlottetown.
The owner of the Discover Kia dealerships in Charlottetown and Summerside as well as Experience Hyundai shop on Mount Edward Road in Charlottetown is adding the Subaru brand to his list.
Pat Morris told The Guardian on Tuesday he plans to opens next to Experience Hyundai by March 1.
"We're going to have a temporary facility for a little bit and renovate the building next door to us,'' Morris said.
Once renovations are finished, the new dealership will encompass approximately 6,000 square feet.
"It's going to be a full-service dealership. People will know there is going to be some stability, that you can get your car serviced.''
This isn't Subaru's first stop in Charlottetown. The City of Charlottetown approved a building permit for the dealership back in 2001 but it didn't last.
Morris thinks things will be different this time.
"Their market share has grown in Atlantic Canada. They were up somewhere around 20 per cent. Realistically, probably five, six, seven years ago the market share probably wasn't big enough to make it sustainable (but) things have changed over the last two or three years where the market share has grown and their volume in Atlantic Canada has increased.
"Their product line has broadened, making it more attractive to everybody.''
According to Subaru Canada Inc., sales have been sold so far this year with 1,813 units retailed in January, just 63 units away from the all-time record in January set in 2012.
Leading the sales charge was the Subaru Outback as results rose by 5.5 per cent over the same period last year. Sales for the dealer's XV Crosstrek were also buoyant with 404 units sold in January, situating results for the new compact crossover 12.2 per cent above its projected target.
The Institute for Highway Safety named Subaru as the only manufacturer to receive the top safety pick across all models.
Subaru is already looking to hire sales consultants and sales managers in Charlottetown. The deadline for applications is Feb. 22.
"The (new dealership) will probably create 10 full-time positions over the next 12 months, once things get going,'' Morris said.
The Charlottetown store will be the 86th authorized Subaru dealership in Canada.
