A Charlottetown homegrown cannabis manufacturer is helping to donate some munchies to front-line workers in the capital city.

Figr, located in the city’s biocommons park, has teamed up with MacAulay’s Bakery & Deli and Receiver Coffee in Charlottetown to donate everything from cupcakes to cookies to essential workers like doctors, nurses, paramedics, firefighters, police, postal workers, sanitation support workers and grocery store employees.

As part of a pay-it-forward initiative, Figr purchased 10,000 baked goods to support local businesses in the communities where the brand operates — Toronto and Norfolk County in Ontario and in Charlottetown.

“We wanted to partner with local players in the community to help support some of the essential service workers at what is obviously a difficult time,’’ said Alex Smith, vice-president of operations at the Charlottetown Figr plant. “We left it with the community partners like (MacAulay’s and Receiver), who then looked to distribute the goods in conjunction with us to very deserving individuals, whether it’s community workers or (staff) in seniors’ homes — people who are really putting themselves out there in the community.’’

Sean Bruinooge, co-owner of Receiver Coffee, said they will be producing 1,000 cookies that will be going out around the first week of June.

The cookies will be handed out primarily to truck drivers with companies such as MacInnis Express, Seafood Express, UPS and Canada Post. They’re also hoping to hand some out to employees at grocery stores.

Jamie Doyle, who owns MacAulay’s Bakery & Deli, said he immediately jumped at the chance to hand out some delicious treats when Figr reached out with the idea.

“These (front-line workers) are not getting the recognition they probably deserve through all of this,’’ Doyle said. “The response that we’ve gotten from the people we’ve delivered the cookies to has been amazing.’’

Smith said Figr tries to be creative in ways it reaches out to help the community.

“We are not able to distribute our products for obvious reasons,’’ Smith said. “That’s why it was great to work with Sean and Jamie. It was a way in which we could do something within the community.’’

Bruinooge said he knows of other acts of kindness through the pandemic. Some of the regulars at Receiver Coffee have reached out and asked to pay for meals and have them delivered to the women’s or men’s shelters.

“It feels great to be able to send these baked goods out to people that we see going non-stop,’’ Bruinooge said.
