A Charlottetown businesswoman is experiencing some wind in her sails since beginning a fabric company in her basement.

Now, Christine Zareck is expanding her business, Material Girl, into a new shop on North River Road. Among her specialities is repairing sailboat sails, boat covers and patio enclosures.

She found the Island had a lack of custom sewers. With sailing and boating a popular Island activity, Zareck said she found a high demand for her work.

“My family is astonished it only took a year to start (the business).”

And, she is quick to note, “We can sew anything.”

Zareck has teamed up with Damien Morris Designs after noticing there was also a need for custom home décor sewing.

“We collab a lot, Damien is amazing.”

Material Girl is holding a grand opening 4:30 p.m. March 15 at 565 North River Rd. Visitors can stop by, mingle over food and refreshments.

With 800 likes on Facebook, Zareck expects the 1055-square-foot sewing workroom to be full of support.

“Everyone is so supportive. Everyone has been a stepping stone.”

She’s also accepting donations to Anderson House at the event.

“I want to be able to help any way I can.”
