Like the Lovin' Spoonful hit song of the same year a 1966 Mustang convertible GT with the top down rolling down the highway seems to exude the fun and free sprit of summer of days gone by. That's the feeling for Hammonds Plains car owners Michelle and Steve Gibbons as they take their classic car out for as many summer weekends as possible.
1966 Ford Mustang GT Convertible
• Night Mist Blue paint job, painted in 1983 by Enfield Auto Body
• Original V8, 225 horsepower 289 engine
• Upgraded to a five speed from the stock four-speed transmission
The Night Mist Blue coloured 1966 Mustang GT convertible has the original V8, 225-horsepower 289 engine. The transmission was upgraded from a stock four-speed to a five-speed. "It's much nicer on the highway," says Steve.
"Originally my dad heard about the car coming up from the states to Moncton in the late '70s," says Steve. He ended up buying the car and bringing it home to enjoy it. A few years went by and Steve's father sold the car. But "he always regretted selling it because it was a true GT convertible. They were rare."
The new owner had it painted in Night Mist Blue acrylic enamel paint in 1983 by Enfield Auto Body. And the paint job has remained.
After a few years Gibbons' father bought it back. It's been in the family ever since.
When his father Keith died in 2006 the car was given to the three sons in the will. "We wrassled over (possession of) it and Michelle and I won," he said. "So it's going to stay in the family. It will go to our kids one day."
When asked what the couple enjoys most about driving around in the car Steve smiles and says, "We love the convertible, we love the wind in our hair, we love the V8 rumble. It's a fun car to drive to bomb around in. It turns heads too. That's cool. But we enjoy it."
There are so many summer car shows they couple like to get out to.
"Every sunny weekend she's on the road. We just have a great time as long as we get that sun roof down."
