China dog and cat fur imports to Canada

Published on April 20, 2011

Two hundred Chinese animal activists made a courageous stand on Friday to block a truck filled with hundreds of dogs being transported for slaughter for fur and meat. These heroes blocked the truck on a busy suburban Beijing highway and did not give up for 15 hours until they negotiated the release of the dogs for $17,000. They risked prosecution and prison. Canada does not have any laws in place to identify the fur used in trinkets, trimming and other merchandise. China dog and cat fur is often dyed and sold as faux (fake fur). The bill to ban the import of cat and dog fur was passed in US but not in Canada. China’s deal to import seal meat would have been jeopardized.  Let the government know we do not support products of horrific animal cruelty and abuse.

This is awful, but we should ask a pertinent question to ourselves. Where does the meat come from which we buy in the supermarket? Factory farming contributes (collectively) to more suffering among sentient life than probably anything throughout history. To speak out against this story and not take action personally, in your own life, regarding animal welfare, is inadequate and ineffective. We, as human beings, are better than this.

This is absolutely cruel and inhumane to do to animals. A law should be in place to prevent acts like this from happening. It is animal cruelty and should not be allowed!!!!!! We spend useless money on killing living animals for their fur but yet we don't have enough money to feed the poor or help the homeless. I am ashamed to even think of myself as a Canadian. The government has done a lot of stupid, horrible stuff before but this is appalling. There's no doubt in my mind that if I could choose to live anywhere in the world right this second, it would not be in Canada.

I hope our Federal Gov. will take a stand on this. This is cruelty, Quite a few years ago I read a report that China also used cats as a food product in their cusine! I don't know if it's true or not but I've never eaten Chinese Food since. I also wouldn't eat anything made with Rabbit.

This is a real horror story. Moreover videos show the animals skinned alive because of the Chinese theory that the more the animal suffers the better the product, plus easier to skin. The USA banned all such imports but Canada allows it because China is still importing the skins of baby seals. It is barbaric and strictly about money. Will someone please teach Canada a new way to live and the next time you look at your pet dog or cat imagine them in this situation. The internet shows them piled alive in their cages watching the killing and knowing they are next. Shame Canada. Demand more from your congress.

@joan mac dougall....actually God is part of the problem, not the solution, when it comes to cruelty to animals. The Bible promotes the idea that animals are here *for* us to do with as we need, they don't have souls, etc.

Dave, the Bible informs us that "all of creation suffers" and looks forward to the coming of the Lord. We were given dominion over animals as their stewards, not their torturers. In myth, dreams, and the Bible, archtypical animals are associated with heaven and the final judgement.

The Bible only supports this idea if you read it that way. God created nonhuman life 'good' and so it existed free from the influence of human beings for perhaps millions of years. When humans were created, they and the animals lived in a state of nonviolent peace until humans sinned. That sin affected everything, and resulted in the relationships between living creatures (human to human, human to animal, and animal to animal) to become unnatural. As to the idea of souls Genesis affirms nonhuman life and human life having what is called the 'breath of life'. We think humans are unique because they bear the imago dei, or the image of God, but this should not be interpreted in an anthropocentric way. Humans bear the imago dei in stewardship and responsibility. God is gracious to us, and we in turn should reflect that. The imago dei constitutes a representation of the attributes of God specific to our species. There will be animals in the coming Kingdom and Isaiah 11:6-9 (among others) supports this. To think that God created billions of species of life and is concerned with only one is awfully un-Godlike. David Clough's 'On Animals: Systematic Theology' is great reading for anyone interested more on this subject.

I will never ever eat in a chinese restaurant again as long as I live and I used to love the food. NO MORE and as the word spreads many of my friends feel the same way. Your wonderful culture has become very ill.

This horrendous practice must be stopped! Worldwide organizations fighting for ethical and humane treatment for all animals on this planet should rally together and make a stand against this deplorable situation. Canadian Politicians, I urge you to step in and ensure this country will no longer accept these imports and shame on the people in China responsible for the slaughters and kudos to those who stepped up to the plate for 15 hrs to save a truckload of innocent dogs before they were butchered. Absolutely appalling....Dawna

I think every MP in Canada who allows this horrible practice to continue should be given a video of the skinning alive of hapless dogs to watch with their children and grandchildren. They should be shown for what they truly are. Complacent and guilty of supporting cruelty.

As a Canadian living in USA I am horrified that Canada allows this. I have seen the videos and read description of the stealing and raising of dogs and cats to skin alive. Apparently skinning alive does not damage the fur!! One video showed a dog wagging its tail in a cage thinking it was getting out when the man approached. Instead he grabbed it by the foreleg, probably smashing it and proceded to skin it alive. I could watch no more but if Canada 's seal killing policy is keeping these horrors in place, perhaps it would be better to just put all the Newfoundlanders on welfare and gain some respect in the rest of the world. What if this was your dog or pet. Bet government would not be so spineless then. Those 200 Chinese are brave souls. Shame, Shame. Shame Canada.

It has nothing to do with the seal hunt. And your Newfoundland comment was peurile. Shame on you too. Of course it's a matter that should be dealt with. But don't go overboard into the realm of the idiotic.

This makes my stomach turn. It's hard to believe this world continues to permit this kind of cruelty. We need to bring attention to the plight of these animals. China continues to be one of the most backwards countries in the world while Canada watches and endorses.

A comprehensive article has been published on The Telegram regarding the violations of the Seal Hunt. Interesting that China has laws to protect their wildlife but not companion animals and Canada has laws to protect companion animals but wildlife and factory animals are not protected

That previous post was about a Chinese restaurant tin Edmonton. Just google animal cruelty in China and see what you find. Does anyone remember the tainted pet food they sent to market a few years ago, killing thousands of pets in the U.S. and Canada? Boycott any and all products coming from this country at least until they smarten up and get their act together. This may mean not shopping at Wal-Mart or at least checking to see where products are made before you buy them. Write your MP, do something. This cruelty must be stopped!

Coyotes, not dogs, found in freezer of restaurant The Edmonton Journal EDMONTON -- Autopsies have determined animal carcasses found last week in a freezer of a restaurant were coyotes, not dogs. The carcasses -- skinned, gutted and frozen -- were found Nov. 4 in a walk-in freezer at Panda Garden Seafood Restaurant. John Lear, a spokesman for Alberta Sustainable Resource Development, said a scientist with the fish and wildlife forensic laboratory completed the autopsies Monday. Bob McClymont compared the carcasses with scientific literature on wolves, dogs and coyotes, Mr. Lear said. He drew his conclusions after measuring the length of different bones, and the positioning and size of the animals' teeth. It is illegal to sell the meat of any wild species in Alberta. An investigation into the discovery continues.

I just don't see anything wrong with dog and cat fur, especially if the animals are used for meat as well. I understand that some people are against the use of any animal for our food or clothing and that is their opinion. However, if we think that using cow leather and eating chickens is fine, what is the rationale for criticizing the use of dogs and cats this way?

There is much truth in this comment. We humans are not very consistant. Eventhough cattle and other stock animals are not cuddley and cute like dogs and cats, we should not harm them in anyway but we do and we will continue to do so. . Other countries have the same perception of dogs and cats that we do of cattle and stock animals as food. If we felt about cattle as we do as cats and dogs in this country, I doubt if we would have the hellhole our food comes from called the slaughter house. If slaughter houses had windows...

I saw one of the video's you described and I could only watch a couple of secs b/f I turned it off, It was so horrific. It shook me to the core, I had nightmares. The people who support this practice are sadistic and the gov't in Canada should do what is right and pass this bill pronto!

There were two private member's bills in the House of Commons that would have banned dog and cat fur (Bill C-439 and Bill C-618), but these bills are now void because of the Spring 2011 election. Once the election is over, our non-profit organization The Association for the Protection of Fur-Bearing Animals will be lobbying for MP's to reintroduce these bills into Parliament. Each year approx 2 million dogs and cats are killed for their fur overseas. You can learn more about the dog and cat fur trade, and other cruelty associated with the commercial fur trade on our website - and what YOU can do to help. www.furbearerdefenders.com Thank you for caring!

Many countries, including the U.S. and the European Union has banned dog and cat fur-but NOT CANADA! Some think it is because we continue with the slaughter of our seals so can't tell China they don't want their fur skins! THIS HAS TO END!!! PLEASE fight for BILL C-439 and BILL C-618 which will prevent the mislabeling/non-labeling of fur (even so-called "faux-fur" which can just be dyed and processed REAL FUR) into Canada!!! What happens to these dogs/cats are horrifying, cruel and inhumane!

Anyone who supports the fur trade is unknowingly supporting this too. China is a huge buyer of our beaver and seal and our government does not want to risk that relationship. It is not fair to rest all of the onus on China when our own government is part of the deal. Even when the Canadian Minister of Trade has been confronted with requests to impose a ban, he has hidden behind the Fur Council of Canada (which is nothing more than a fur marketing group and NOT affiliated with the government) and their promotion of the these atrocities. Talk to your politicians and let them know you do not support the fur trade!

It is too bad i have to remain courteous because i sure don't feel like it. Have you ever watched the horrific videos of these animals firstly being transported in the conditions unbearable to ANYTHING ! Then brutalized before they are killed because of the Chinese religious belief that the more TRAUMATIC OF A DEATH THEY RECEIVED BEFORE DEATH the moister their meat is ???? Then tied up by one leg and skinned alive while they squirm from the tail to the head, then their still alive mutilated body is simply thrown on a pile to die amongst his mates. It is absolutely the most horrific thing i have ever seen, do these people have ANY MORALS because we here in Canada just don't think so, and i for one will be at the FRONT OF ANY OF ANY TRANSPORT TRUCK here in Canada and will stop them too ! Grow up China this is the year 2011

I could not watch such wanton cruelty done to animals that have no place to run. Even if it was for food or clothing like the cows and chickens we eat in Canada you have to wonder why they torture them to death. Skinning them alive? Sounds like the seal hunt where they club babies and skin them alive. Yes this is Canada people!! What about animals kept in such small pens they cannot even turn around for their entire lives. The puppy and kitten mills where the adult dogs are suffering and people are still buying the cheap purebreds? How many of you are buying cats and dogs from backyard breeders who don't care about the animals but just breed for the money they can make from the babies of these suffering animals who are having litters after litters without decent food and care? Then they kill the parents when they are no longer useful to them? Your pet stores buy these animals from these overbred and underfed animals! Well if you aren't sympathetic to the Canadian animals why are you outraged to the Chinese animal torturers? Canada is no different and so when you turn your eyes and back on the inhuman animal suffering in Canada you have no right to judge the other countries do you? That is what being a hypocrite is. Clean up your own backyard Canada and then you can help educate the ignorant third world countries and their cruelities performed onto man and beast!!

This needs to stop, right now .Canada is a civilized society. Now that it has been brought to light, there is no excuse. I do remember looking at fur trimmed clothing, and wondering what kind of fur,it looked nothing like anything I had ever seen,so decided it was fake fur.So we didnt know that human beings could be so disgusting and cruel. In my opinion, this is what happens when GOD is no longer a part of life.By what I read and see,Canada is on a slippery slope.I to am a former Canadian.,No more,.From what I read and hear it has gone well beyond socialism, and on the fast track to communism[ like China] and my relatives dont even SEE THAT.All that matters is ,its all FREE. How is iit free when you are taxed to death and wait in line and hope you dont die before you get an apt. with a surgeon .Well learn the hard way....
