CAVENDISH, P.E.I. – Stratford’s Sherry White has a seven-shot lead after the first round of the Cooke Insurance Prince Edward Island Amateur Golf Championship.
White recorded a 3-over 75 at Green Gables Golf Club on Friday and leads Stanhope’s Chrissie MacLauchlan and Cornwall’s Fiona Thompson for top spot in the 12-women field.

MacLauchlan is the defending champ while White had won four of the past five before 2017.
Mother Nature won the first round of the men’s competition as excessive rain and lightning resulted in organizers cancelling the round after all but the final two groups had begun play. The men will now play a 36-hole competition beginning on Saturday. Tim Yorke is the two-time defending champ.
