Warriors win bantam opener

O’Leary-based team scores three unanswered third-period goals

CORNWALL – The Prince County Warriors have started the 2017-18 P.E.I. Major Bantam AAA Hockey League regular season on a winning note.
The Warriors scored three unanswered third-period goals to double the Mid-Isle Matrix 6-3 in the league’s opening game at the APM Centre on Tuesday night.
Jesse Blanchard’s unassisted goal with 15:13 remaining in the third period gave the Warriors the lead for good. Carson Wood (2), Sam Hackett (1-1), Zach Biggar (1-1) and Donovan Arsenault also scored. Ethan Reilly (2), Garrett Culleton and Frederick Morency drew assists.
For the Matrix, Landon Hardy (2-1) and Reese Wyand (1-1) found the back of the net. Harrison James (2) and Sarah MacEachern set up the goals.
The Warriors led 2-1 after the first period, and the teams were tied 3-3 following the second.
Aiden Williams earned the goaltending win, and Josh Smith was between the pipes for the Matrix.
The Warriors’ home opener scheduled for Friday at 7:30 p.m., when the Eastern Express visit the O’Leary Community Sports Centre.
