It was a split decision for the Holland Hurricanes on Wednesday night in Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association soccer action.
The Hurricanes hosted the Crandall University Chargers at the Terry Fox Sports Complex in Cornwall.
The women kicked off the evening in a game that saw the Chargers come out victorious by a score of 2-1 while the Hurricanes men followed, picking up a 4-0 victory.
The women’s Hurricanes took the early lead when Sabrina Molnar scored in the 13th minute. Her header found the back of the net after a cross from Akira Cook.
In the 38th minute, the Chargers would bounce back when Gabriella Hale chipped the ball past Hurricanes keeper Cassidy Durston for the goal to tie the game at 1-1.
The scoring would come to an end in the 40th minute as Paige Talbot gave the Chargers the 2-1 lead with the goal late in the first half. There would be no scoring in the second half.
With the loss the ‘Canes fall to 3-4-2 on the season and sit in fourth in the ACAA standings. The Chargers jump to third at 4-5-0 with the win while Dal AC is in first (5-1-2) and STU is in second (5-2-1). The ‘Canes lead the MSVU Mystics (2-2-4, fifth place) by one point.
The Hurricanes take on the first place Dal AC Rams Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Terry Fox Complex in Cornwall in their final home game of the season.
On the men’s side, the Hurricanes opened the scoring just 13 minutes into the game when James Mallard scored with a header after a corner kick.
The Hurricanes second goal would come at the start of the second half when Ibra Sanoh finished things off in the 49th minute to give Holland College a 2-0 lead.
Another Sanoh goal in the 84th minute followed by his third of the game in the 88th minute gave him the hat trick as the Hurricanes cruised to the 4-0 victory.
The victory puts the Hurricanes at 9-0 this season as they’ve dominated the ACAA soccer standings; the UKC Blue Devils sit at second with a 4-2-2 record. With the loss the Crandall Chargers now sit at 4-4-1 and in a tie for third place.
The men’s ‘Canes will host the 1-7-0 Dal AC Rams Sunday at 4 p.m. at the Terry Fox Sports Complex in Cornwall in their final home games of 2017.
