CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. – Although the score was not reflective of the play, the UPEI men’s soccer squad was held to a 1-0 victory over the Mount Saint Vincent Mystics in a friendly game played Saturday afternoon at the UPEI turf.

It was a match where the Panthers had total control of the game, dominating in possession and territorial play throughout the Mulligan Cup contest. The Mystics could only put together a few counter attacks, usually down one of the wings.

The only goal of the game was scored in the 23rd minute on a penalty kick when Panther midfielder Sam Smiley was taken down making one of his dangerous runs inside the penalty area off a pass from Jesse Cameron.

Midfielder Nacho Sanchez stepped up to the penalty spot and calmly put the ball in the back of the net.

Panther keeper Nathan Ford, playing his third straight game, earned his second clean sheet and was never seriously tested throughout the game.

The stats told the whole story of the game as UPEI had 31 shots toward goal with 11 on target, while the Mystics were held to eight shots toward goal with six on target. The Panthers held a 13-3 advantage in chances while UPEI out fouled Mount Saint Vincent 10-7 and dominated in corner kicks 11-1.

“It was nice to bounce back with a win after losing our last game,” said Panther coach Lewis Page. “We were good in possession again, but we have to start turning chances into goals because you don’t win games by creating chances, you win games by scoring goals.”

The Panthers will round out their exhibition play with a second match against the Mystics on Sunday at 11 a.m. in preparation for their home opener against St. FX Saturday, Sept. 9, at 5:15 p.m.
