Katherine Dewar and James Briand have been named athletes of the week by Holland College.
CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. - It was quite a weekend for Holland College’s James Briand.
The Hurricanes men’s soccer and Antigonish, N.S., native was not only named one of Holland College’s athletes of the week but he was also named one of the Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association’s top athletes of the week.
Briand, a second-year winger with the ‘Canes had a pair of offensive games this weekend, scoring four times in back-to-back victories.
On Saturday, Briand would score in the first half and again midway through the second, powering the ‘Canes to a 6-0 win over the Rams. He followed it up with a pair of goals in the second half in Sunday’s 4-1 win over the Chargers in Moncton.
Briand is currently in the sport and leisure management program.
Moira Kinney, a second-year striker with the St. Thomas University women’s soccer team, and a native of Florenceville-Bristol, N.B., was the ACAA female athlete of the week.
Soccer player Katherine Drake was also selected as one of the Holland College players of the week.
Drake, a fourth-year centre back with the Hurricanes showed leadership in both games on the weekend as the ‘Canes started their ACAA regular season. Her ability to stay calm and help a young Hurricanes back four was an asset.
In Saturday’s match, a 3-1 victory over the Dal AC Rams, her leadership kept the 2016 leading scorer to no goals while on Sunday, a 2-1 loss to the Crandall Chargers, she led by example in the second half, winning tackle after tackle and moving the ball forward as the ‘Canes pressed for an equalizer.
Drake, a Stratford native, is currently studying in the photography program.
The Hurricanes soccer teams will be back in action this weekend on the road when they face the UKC Blue Devils on Saturday and the MSVU Mystics on Sunday in Halifax.
The ‘Canes hold their 2017 home opener on Saturday, Sept. 23 at the Terry Fox Complex in Cornwall when they host the STU Tommies.
