P.E.I U16 girls reach final

Medal games at Atlantic soccer championships go Tuesday

HALIFAX – The P.E.I. under-16 girls clinched a spot in the gold-medal game of the Bell Aliant Atlantic soccer championships.

Caitlyn McCloskey scored to lift P.E.I. into a 1-1 draw against Nova Scotia on Monday. P.E.I. completed round-robin play 1-1-1 (won-lost-tied), and will face the same Nova Scotia team in Tuesday’s final.
The P.E.I. under-15 girls also tied Nova Scotia. The final score was 2-2, with Heidi Lauwerijssen providing the Island with another two-goal performance.
The tie was not enough as P.E.I. lost out on a berth in the final on goal differential. P.E.I. will face New Brunswick in the bronze-medal contest on Tuesday.
In Moncton, N.B., the P.E.I. under-16 boys needed a victory against a tough Newfoundland and Labrador team to reach the final, but came up short in a 2-1 decision. The game was tied late into the match, with Elias Bitar getting the goal.
P.E.I. pushed its players forward to try and score the winning goal, but Newfoundland and Labrador countered to score a late goal.
The P.E.I. under-15 boys had already secured a spot in the final, and dropped a 3-0 decision to Newfoundland and Labrador on Monday. The two teams will meet in the championship game on Tuesday.
