CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. – Kiera Rigby and Marcus Power are this week’s UPEI Panther Subway athletes of the week.
Rigby is a fifth-year forward on the women’s basketball team and a science (honours) student from Charlottetown.
Rigby scored 25 points Saturday while shooting 44 per cent from the field as UPEI defeated the U Sports No. 1-ranked Acadia Axewomen 88-68 in Wolfville, N.S. She also had five rebounds, four assists, two steals, and two blocked shots.
In Friday’s 84-69 victory at Dalhousie, Rigby had a career-high 30 points on 72 per cent shooting from the floor, including 75 per cent from behind the three-point line and 78 per cent from the free-throw line. She also recorded two assists, four steals and a block.
“Kiera’s performance on the weekend was the best individual performance by a player in my tenure at UPEI,” said coach Greg Gould.
It was Rigby’s second consecutive week as the female athlete of the week. Rigby also recieved the Atlantic University Sport award as well.
Power is a fourth-year forward on the men’s hockey team and a business administration student from St. John’s, N.L.
He helped UPEI split a pair of games during the weekend, beating Acadia 5-1 Friday and losing 5-2 to Saint Mary’s Saturday.
“Marcus has been one our most consistent players this season,” said coach Forbes MacPherson. “He was playing on a line Friday night with R.T. Rice and Darcy Ashley; they were dominant all night, and Marcus was rewarded with three goals.”
