BEDFORD, N.S. – The Charlottetown Bulk Carriers Pride is off to the playoff round at the 2018 Chronicle Herald East Coast Ice Jam hockey tournament.
The Pride topped the East Coast Blizzard 5-3 on Friday afternoon to complete round-robin play in the Major Midget Division undefeated at 3-0 (won-lost). The playoff matchups will not be known until the completion of round-robin play on Friday night.
Earlier Friday, the Kensington Monaghan Farms Wild dropped a 6-1 decision to the Cole Harbour Wolfpack to fall to 1-2.
In the Major Bantam Division, the Central Attack and the Wear Well Bombers skated to a 2-2 tie after overtime solved nothing. The Attack also had one win and one overtime loss in the round robin.
Also in the Major Bantam Division, the Mid-Isle Matrix lost 4-0 to the TriPen Ice, the Prince County Warriors dropped a 3-2 decision to the Cole Harbour PHL Storm, and the Eastern Express trimmed the Joneljim Cougars 8-2.
Pride 5 Blizzard 3
The Pride erupted for four third-period goals in the come-from-behind victory.
Kennedy Gallant (2), Shaul Mitton (1-2), Owen MacNeill and Sam MacNeill provided goals for the Pride. Single helpers went to Connor McGregor, Riley MacDougall, Nick Reeves and Luke Garnhum.
The first period ended in a 1-1 tie, and the Blizzard took a 2-1 advantage into the final frame.
Winning goaltender was Ben Parent.
Wolfpack 6 Wild 1
The Wolfpack scored twice 36 seconds apart just past the nine-minute mark of the first period to take a 2-0 lead, and never looked back. Cole Harbour held period leads of 2-0 and 4-0.
Frank Fortin, assisted by Colby MacArthur and Ryan Richards, scored the Wild’s lone goal.
Chad Arsenault handled Kensington’s goaltending duties.
Storm 3 Warriors 2
Zach Biggar and Will Smith each had a goal and an assist for the Warriors, who dropped three one-goal decisions. Mike McRae contributed two assists.
The first period was scoreless, and the Storm led 1-0 after the second.
Aiden Williams handled the goaltending chores for Prince County.
Bombers 2 Attack 2
Josh Lund’s goal at 3:34 of the third period tied the game for the Attack, who also received a goal from Jacob Squires. Ben Watts, Isaac Vos, John MacKinnon and Tyler Worth contributed helpers.
The period scores were 1-0 in favour of the Attack, and 2-1 for the Bombers.
AJ Cooper was between the pipes for the Attack.
Express 8 Cougars 2
Jack Campbell earned four assists to lead the Express, who built period leads of 1-0 and 5-2. Bradley Holden (2), Cole McKeigan (1-2), Sam Parsons (1-2), Seth MacLeod (1-2), Gavin Mason, Carsen Lund and Avery Brown scored for the Express while assists were credited to Simon Hughes (2), JT Wood, Alex Dixon, Sam Worth and Lance Kennedy.
Drew Chapman earned the goaltending win.
The Express finished with one win, one loss and one tie.
Ice 4 Matrix 0
After a scoreless opening period, the Ice took a 2-0 advantage into the final frame.
Ty Arsenault was in goal for the Matrix (0-3).
