CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. – An Island boxer get his first taste of international competition tonight in Puerto Rico.

Colton Perry, an 18-year-old Marshfield resident, flew to San Juan on Thursday to compete with Team Canada, a 26-member squad of coaches and athletes. He will be fighting the Puerto Rican champ at the senior, 132-pound (60-kg) weight class.

Howard Watts, who is Perry’s coach at KO-ed Boxing Academy, said it is the biggest match of the boxer’s career, but he is ready after a busy few weeks of competition and some heavy sparring from clubmates Robert and Stephen MacMillan.

“He’s in top shape and fought well last week,” Watts said.

Perry defeated Muhammad Milad at the Tribal Boxing Club in Dartmouth, N.S., winning a unanimous decision on Saturday, May 12.

Perry also won his previous fight in New Brunswick and has a career 32-8 record. He has won the Golden Gloves in Ontario in the past. Watts said Perry earned the opportunity to participate in the international event based on his performances.

“It’ll be a different competition for him because apparently boxing over there is like hockey in Canada,” Watts said.
