KENSINGTON – The Charlottetown Rural Team Two Raiders got hot offensively at the right time.

The Raiders scored 10 unanswered points in the final two minutes of the third quarter to break a 28-28 tie en route to a 46-37 win over the Montague Vikings in a very competitive boys’ final of the second annual Aidan K. Harrington Memorial basketball tournament, hosted by Kensington Intermediate-Senior High School on Saturday afternoon.
“We got a little bit of momentum going there, and it stayed at that level for pretty much all of the fourth quarter,” said Raiders coach Mike Lloyd. “You never know it’s going to do that, so all it would have taken is a three and they would have been right there with us at the end.
“I do think our boys played tougher in the fourth quarter, and maybe Montague was a bit tired because they had to play back-to-back games. We both played two games (Saturday), but theirs was a back-to-back situation.”

The top two teams after round-robin play advanced to the championship game.

The Raiders, who are 11-1 (won-lost) in league play and seeded seventh in the latest P.E.I. School Athletic Association basketball rankings, completed tournament play 4-0.
“We played quite relaxed and very well offensively in the round-robin games,” assessed Lloyd. “When it came to the championship game, the boys were pressing a bit and were a bit tight.
“Montague is a very fine team, with numerous very good players. I feel they played very well, and they are certainly one of the teams we have to worry about and contend with the rest of the season.”

Rhys Storr scored 17 points to lead the Raiders while Logan Fitzpatrick had 15 for Montague.
Nolan Ryan of the Raiders was selected as the tournament most valuable player while all-star awards were presented to Johnathan Lauwerijssen of Kensington, Ethan Lawless of Kinkora, Alex MacDougall of Montague and Donovan Ching of Rural.

Fond memories
Lloyd said in an interview with the Journal Pioneer following the championship game he has fond memories of Harrington, who was a star basketball player at KISH.
“I did get to coach Aidan when he was in junior high school and I was coaching a club rep group that went around and played some games in the Maritimes,” said Lloyd. “He was a really fine shooter, and a good basketball player all around.
“I really enjoyed Aidan, and he got a chance to play with one of my sons (Ryan Lloyd). It’s always neat looking back years down the road to see some of the people who were involved with your own family.”
