“Once we got into our press break, I thought we were pretty effective and scored some easy baskets,” Panthers head coach Greg Gould said. “I always tell the kids, if you score against pressure, guess what? The pressure goes away because they just can’t afford to keep pressing and giving up easy baskets.”

The Panthers lost 72-59 at Cape Breton in January where Gould said turnovers were costly.

“We weren’t very happy the way we played over in Cape Breton. We knew we could play better,” he said. “We were determined in preparation that we would look after the pressure.”

Kiera Rigby had 20 points, six rebounds, an assist, a steal and a block to be named player of the game. The fourth-year forward from Charlottetown was recognized after the game on senior day at UPEI. The team wraps up the season on the road this weekend.

Point guard Jenna Mae Ellsworth had 14 points, five assists, three rebounds, three steals and two blocks. Karla Yepez (12 points, 10 rebounds) and Jane McLaughlin (11 points, 11 rebounds) each added double-doubles.

Allison Keough led the Capers with 22 points, 16 rebounds and three assists while Hannah Brown 12 points off the bench. Colleen Keane and Valentina Primossi each chipped in 10 points.

The Panthers held quarter leads of 23-11, 33-27 and 51-43.

UPEI improved to 9-9 and are in fifth place in the standings. They can finish anywhere from four to six.

With the win over third-place Cape Breton (12-6), UPEI has now defeated all six playoff teams they could see in Halifax for the AUS championships.

While Gould said it is a positive, the team’s focus in recent weeks has been more internally than on the opposition.

“For me, it’s not about who we play, it’s how we play,” he said. “To me we still have a lot of upside.”

The Panthers finish the regular season at Dalhousie on Friday and St. FX on Saturday. The Dalhousie game is worth four points in the standings while the St. FX game counts for two points.
