CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. – The Island Gymnastics Academy will host more than 400 of the region’s top gymnasts at the Prince Edward Classic starting today in Charlottetown.

The three-day competition will take place at the Delta Prince Edward. Athletes from across Atlantic Canada are competing to qualify for a spot on their provincial teams. Gymnasts who qualify at this competition have the opportunity to compete later in the season at regional and national championships. Island Gymnastics Academy has hosted the competition annually for more than 20 years, and it is considered one of the premier meets in Atlantic Canada.

“This competition is a major invitational competition for our region and an important qualifier for the provincial teams,” said Nick Murray, member of the organizing committee.

The Classic, which is open to the public, provides Island gymnasts the opportunity to showcase their talents before a hometown crowd. The Saturday evening session, which begins at 5 p.m., will feature the highest-level gymnasts in the region.

Gymnasts from all four Island clubs – St. Louis Gymnos, Summerside Saultos, Victory Gymnastics, as well as the Academy, will all be well represented.

World championship silver medallist Ellie Black of Halifax will be attending the meet, but will not be competing. She will be at the competition on Saturday evening and Sunday morning, where she will present awards and meet the gymnasts.

The full competition schedule can be found at www.islandgymnasticsacademy.com.
