The Storm (7-8) defeated the Riptide (10-6) 115-113 Sunday at the Eastlink Centre to improve its head-to-head record with the Port City to 3-1. Saint John has lost three of its last four games.
“Right now we’re chasing Saint John. We’re trying to get up to that two seed in the Atlantic Division,” Storm head coach Joe Salerno said Thursday. “I really like where we’re at it right now, but we have a tough game tomorrow night. Saint John is a tough team.”
Salerno said he has liked how the team has played since putting Terry Thomas, Nick Okorie and Jahii Carson together in the starting lineup a couple of weeks ago.
“They’re all unselfish players, but they all make things happen when the ball is in their hands,” he said.
Thomas leads the team in scoring at 21.6 points per game and steals at 2.4. Carson is averaging a team-high 6.6 assists per game to go with 21 points. Okorie is scoring 17 points per game while hitting 52 per cent of his 83 three-point shots.
The Storm had an off day on Monday, practised Tuesday and Wednesday, but missed Thursday’s session due to the storm.
They will spend a little extra time this morning in the walk-through to go over details of their game plan. If the team had to miss a practice this close to a game, it is fortunate to be at home and playing the same team it most recently played.
“We’ll be ready to go tomorrow night,” Salerno said of tonight’s 7 p.m. contest.
After tonight, the Storm plays the Moncton Miracles three straight times, including its first trip to Moncton on Saturday. The teams play an Islanders Day matinee Monday at 2 p.m.
