CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — The summer basketball season kicks off this weekend in Charlottetown for club and provincial teams.
The Red Rock Classic has attracted 45 teams and about 500 athletes from across the Maritimes for three days of hoops action in six Charlottetown gymnasiums.
“The Red Rock . . . acts as kind of a tipoff tournament,” said Basketball P.E.I. executive director Trent Whitty. “These will be their first games they’ll get to play since forming their team.”
The tournament used to be held on the Canada Day long weekend, but it was moved to the first weekend of June last year with the Canada 150 celebrations impacting the number of accommodations available a year ago. The change worked well, Whitty said, and they decided to push it a week earlier this year as teams were always trying to find exhibition games early in the season.
Wayne Long, Charlottetown’s events development officer, said the date change creates an opportunity for increased prosperity early in the tourism season.
“It’s at a great time of the year,” he said. “It’s at a time, where we can use that injection.”
The tournament is in its ninth season and continues to grow. Admission is $10 for the tournament or $5 per day.
The provincial teams are gearing up for this summer’s nationals. The under-15 and -17 girls event is in Fredericton, N.B., while the boys are in Kamloops, B.C. Both events are taking place Aug. 6-11.
