Hurricanes win all three ACAA volleyball contests during the weekend

CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. – The Holland College Hurricanes volleyball teams swept their weekend matches with the men winning twice at St. Thomas and the women winning their match at home against the Université de Sainte-Anne 3-0 (25-10, 25-16 and 25-13).

The ‘Canes men got their Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) title defence off to a strong start with a pair of straight set wins over the Tommies. On Saturday, the ‘Canes won 27-25, 25-22 and 25-20 while on Sunday the scores were 25-23, 25-18 and 25-22.

Brett Butler led the Hurricanes attack on Saturday with 14 kills while Gordon Veitch had 10. William Pugh, Riley Cortes and Jeff MacDonald all had six.

Nathan Archibald had a match-high 37 assists while Marcus Lapointe contributed a match-high 10 digs. Veitch added nine digs while Butler and Cortes both had six.

On Sunday, Butler and Veitch again led the attack with 13 and 10 kills, respectively.

Archibald had 22 assists while six players had at least three digs led by Veitch and Lapointe with seven each followed by Butler and Cortes with five.

The ‘Canes put their 2-0 record on the line this weekend when they host the Université de Sainte-Anne Dragons in their home opener Saturday at 4 p.m. and Sunday at 11 a.m.

In women’s action, Brittany States led the attack with eight kills while Alice Marques and Megan LeBlanc each had seven. Philicia Johnson had six, Sam Gerbig four and Lauren Moerike three in a balanced attack.

Gracie Ferguson had 20 assists and Emma Joudrey had 13 for the women. Dana Trainor had a match-high nine digs with Marques and LeBlanc each added four.

The ‘Canes (2-0) start to the season host the Dal AC Rams Saturday at 2 p.m.
