CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. – The Holland Hurricanes basketball teams saw mixed results on Thursday against the Mount Allison Mounties.
The women fell 71-59 while the men clinched first place with a 109-81 win.
In the women’s game, the ‘Canes jumped out front 17-8 in the first quarter but would give up the lead and trail 28-26 at the half. The deficit would continue to grow in the third as the ‘Canes would trail 49-41 heading to the fourth.
Jayla Verney and Lexi MacInnis both had 14 points to lead the ‘Canes while Tyleigha Nelson added 13. Verney chipped in eight rebounds, four assists, four steals and a block while MacInnis contributed four rebounds, four assists, two steals and a block. Nelson had five rebounds, five assists and a steal while Alyssa Canning was the team’s top rebounder with 10.
The ‘Canes (11-5) are tied for second with the Mounties (11-4).
Holland College plays the UNBSJ Seawolves (2-12) Monday at 1 p.m. in Saint John, N.B.
In Thursday’s men’s game, the ‘Canes jumped out to a 28-15 lead after the first quarter and would use the momentum of a buzzer-beating three by Roosevelt (Chicken) Whyley to propel them to a strong second quarter and a 61-38 halftime lead. The ‘Canes went to the fourth up 90-58.
Marcus Dawkins had a game-high 19 points for the ‘Canes along with three rebounds, three assists and three steals. Jace Colley and Michael Kayeye both had 18 points in the win with Colley adding nine rebounds and two assists while Kayeye chipped in with four rebounds and two steals. Whyley recorded 17 points, 12 rebounds, three assists and a steal in the win.
The ‘Canes improved to 17-1 on the season while the Mounties fall to 14-4 and sit in second place.
The ‘Canes hit the road this weekend to take on the Dal AC Rams in Bible Hill, N.S., Sunday at 4:30 p.m. before visiting the UNBSJ Seawolves Monday at 3 p.m.
The Rams are 3-15 on the season and sit in a tie for seventh place. The ‘Canes have won both matchups versus Dal AC so far the season picking up wins in Charlottetown on November 19 by a score of 123-62 and on January 13 by a score of 104-61.
The Seawolves are 7-9 on the season and are in fifth place in the ACAA. The ‘Canes are 2-0 against UNBSJ this season with both wins coming in Charlottetown by scores of 115-65 and 110-52.
The Hurricanes end their regular seasons at home on Saturday, Feb. 24 when they host the Tommies at 2 and 4 p.m.
