CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. – Head coach Greg Gould is retiring from the UPEI Panthers women’s basketball team.

The announcement was made on Thursday.

“After 48 years of coaching, it is time to retire and spend more time with family and friends. I have so many great memories of my players and I have met so many wonderful people through my time coaching,” Gould said in a statement. “I would like to thank everyone who helped me during my five years here at UPEI, especially my assistant coaches who contributed so much to the success of the program. It is satisfying to know that I am leaving the women’s basketball team in better shape than I found it, and I believe the foundation has been laid for the program to challenge for AUS (Atlantic University Sport) championships for years to come.”

Gould was hired to coach the Panthers in 2012, taking over a team that had a 2-58 record during the previous three seasons. He coached UPEI from 2012-13 to 2013-14 and from 2015-16 to 2017-18. His teams earned a 43-57 record, making four trips to the playoffs. It missed the post-season in his first year when UPEI finished sixth, but a team below them in the standings hosted the tournament.

This year, the Panthers went 11-9 during the regular season and lost to the U Sports third-ranked Acadia Axewomen in the conference final.

“Greg Gould is an experienced, committed and highly successful coach. We thank him for taking our program through two growth cycles, both resulting in the women’s team reaching the AUS finals,” said director of athletics and recreation Chris Huggan. “We will have big shoes to fill.”

Gould, a Moncton native, previously coached girls’ basketball teams at Moncton, Fredericton and Riverview high schools. He also coached at St. Thomas University and New Brunswick Teachers' College as well as with a variety of provincial basketball teams.

A search for a new coach will begin immediately.
