CHARLOTTETOWN – An early break by betting favourite Adkins Hanover sealed the deal for Euchred to secure the lead and hit the winner’s circle in the featured event on Saturday’s opening day program at Red Shores Racetrack and Casino at the Charlottetown Driving Park.
Euchred left from Post 2, and was sent to the front from the start in the $2,500 preferred pace by trainer-driver Terry Gallant en route to a 1:56.2 victory for owner Kayla Habicht Walker of Inverness, N.S. The newly free-legged Adkins Hanover, driven by Adam Merner, made a break in stride behind the gate as the even-money favourite.
Second went to Mr Irresistible (Jason Hughes), with Czar Seelster (Kenny Arsenault) third.
Bad Silver, with Todd Walsh at the controls, claimed the first dash of the season in 2:01.3 for owner Ellen Carragher of Stratford.
Brodys Leona was a winner in the top mare’s pace of the season-opening event, claiming the $1,800 race in 1:58.4 for driver Corey MacPherson, trainer-co-owner Kerry Taylor of Stratford, along with co-owners Emily Taylor of Stratford and Lisa Richards of Cornwall. Malabrigo (Marc Campbell) marked her return to racing by yielding a second-place finish after a nearly six-year hiatus, ending her previous win streak at 16 races.
Merner recorded a driving triple on the program, winning with Cartoon Daddy in 1:57.3 for trainer Rachel Andrew of Milton, and Likely To Win (1:59.1) and Political Crisis (1:59.3) from his own stable.
