Errors the difference as PEI loses to hosts in Canada Games baseball

WINNIPEG, MAN. – Errors were costly Monday as Team P.E.I. 10-4 to host Manitoba at the Canada Games in Winnipeg.

The Island squad was charged for five errors, which led six unearned runs.

P.E.I. scored three in the bottom of the third inning to take a 3-2 lead in a game televised on TSN. Manitoba took a 4-3 lead in the top of the fifth only to see Prince Edward Island tie it in the bottom of the inning.

Manitoba scored three times in the next two innings to improve to 4-0 while P.E.I. fell to 1-3.

Owen Harms was 3-for-5 for Manitoba while Noah Geekie was 2-for-2.

Leadoff hitter Chandler Laporte was 2-for-3 for the Island squad. Ben MacDougall and Colin Gaudette each had a double while Noah Duckworth and Josh Myers singled. Myers had two RBI while MacDougall had one.

Logan MacDougall was tagged with the loss after giving up six runs, five of them unearned, on seven hits in 5 2/3 innings. He walked one and struck out one.

Laporte gave up four runs, including an unearned run, on four hits and a walk in relief.

Martin Gisiger earned the win in relief of Jon Patmore.

P.E.I. plays Newfoundland and Labrador (0-4) today at 3 p.m.
