CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. - With rain forcing the postponement of both Saturday programs, Old Home Week 2018 came to a close on Sunday with a doubleheader of racing at Red Shores at the Charlottetown Driving Park.
The evening program culminated in the $60,000 Guardian Gold Cup and Saucer won by Simon Allard and Somewhere Fancy, but before that Ms Mac N Cheese also visited the winner’s circle with Allard in the bike. The $6,500 fillies and mares open pace saw Ms Mac N Cheese stalk in the two-hole then pop up the backstretch to win in 1:54.2 for Allard and trainer David Ratchford of North Sydney, N.S.
Also on the Sunday evening program, Do Over Hanover won the $7,500 Atlantic Canada Invitational in 1:54.3 with Jason Hughes in the bike for trainer Chris MacKay and owners Donald MacRae of Vernon Bridge and Allard Racing Inc., of Saint-Esprit, Que.
Sock It Away remained undefeated on the season after wiring his foes in a $10,000 Joe O’Brien Memorial gold division in 1:55.1 for driver Marc Campbell, trainer Kevin MacLean and owner Reg MacPherson of Stratford.
Woodmere Ideal Art and Hughes won the other split in 1:55.4 for trainer Sifroi Melanson and owner Ultimate Stable of Greater Lakeburn, N.B.
Young Man Matt won the $7,100 Alpine Claiming Series final as part of a driving triple for reinsman Jody Jamieson. The mile was recorded in 1:56.1 for Young Man Matt, who is owned and trained by Terry Gallant of Summerside.
Another part of Jamieson’s hat trick was in the $3,500 open trot as he upsetted with Stan The Man in 2:00.1 for trainer Ron MacDonald.
Campbell was awarded the Francis McIsaac Memorial award for top Old Home Week driver, while Jamieson was the top percentage driver of the week.
Total wager for the 14-dash Sunday program was $228,695.
Afternoon
On the 10-dash afternoon program, trainer Blaine McKenna and driver Jody Jamieson swept the O’Brien Memorial Grassroots divisions. The first $6,500 Grassroots split was captured by Easy Flyer in 1:58.1 while Hunger Pangs won the other division in 1:58.4.
