Mid-Isle caps impressive 2017-18 season with four-game sweep

POWNAL – The Robin's Mid-Isle Matrix capped a very impressive 2017-18 season in style Thursday night.

The Matrix topped the Pownal Taco Boyz Red Devils 5-2 to sweep the best-of-seven championship series in the P.E.I. Midget AAA Hockey League.
Mid-Isle, which finished first in the regular season at 23-4-3 (won-lost-tied), posted a perfect 7-0 post-season record, outshooting their opponents 37-14.
At the Pownal Sports Centre, Duncan Picketts scored two goals, Nick Trainor added a goal and an assist and Ben Peters contributed three helpers to pace the Matrix’s offence in the series-clinching win. Zach Wilson and Zac MacKay also scored for the Matrix, who received single helpers from Chandler LaPorte, Joe MacEachern, Kyler Weeks, Kayden MacLeod and David Sato.
Grant Koughan and Nick Steele were each credited with a goal and an assist for the Red Devils, who completed the regular season in second place at 18-10-2. Lucas Parsons and Michael Jenkins drew helpers.
The Matrix, who also posted 5-3, 6-4 and 6-2 wins in the final series, jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the opening period, and took a 3-0 margin into the final 20 minutes.
Matt Jelley earned the goaltending win over Trevor Whalen.
After both finalists received a bye in the quarter-finals, the Matrix swept the Western Regals in one best-of-five semifinal while the Red Devils went the distance against the Kings County Kings, winning the fifth and deciding game in double overtime.
Mid-Isle rotates its home games between the APM Centre in Cornwall and Credit Union Centre in Kensington, previously Community Gardens.
