CORNWALL, P.E.I. – The Island Mariners earned the Maritime Football League franchise’s first win with a recent 29-14 victory over the Halifax Harbour Hawks in Cornwall.

The Mariners sit 1-4 in the standings in the four-team circuit and have a 1-10 record during two seasons. Halifax dropped to 1-3.

Halifax quarterback Jonah Williams scored on the opening drive, but the Mariners Brennan Davis threw a 15-yard touchdown to Cole Brydges.

After the Mariners intercepted a Williams’ pass, Davis eventually made it 14-8 with a running TD and an extra point.

Halifax's Brad Lelievre kicked a pair of field goals and made things 14-14 at the half.

But the Mariners got a 15-yard rushing TD from Rod De Montes in the third quarter and a Brydges TD pass to Dillon Fortune in the fourth.

Javier Bolanos had a fumble recovery and Jasper Thompson, Hernan Guyton, Revello Williamson and Mitchell Osomond recorded sacks in the team’s inaugural win.

It was the annual Terry Allen memorial game honouring the longtime P.E.I. Privateers general manager. The Mariners grew out of the defunct Privateers organization.

The Mariners finish the regular season Saturday versus the Moncton Mustangs (4-0) in Moncton. Game time is 4 p.m.

The playoffs begin Saturday, June 16.
