CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. – The Holland College Hurricanes volleyball teams finished the regular season on a winning note.
The women won at Mount Allison on Saturday and St. Thomas on Sunday, while the men split home games, losing Saturday to UNBSJ before defeating St. Thomas on Sunday in Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) play.
Women
The women won in straight sets (25-17, 25-18, 25-20.) on Saturday in Sackville, N.B.
Brittany States led the attack with 12 kills while Sam Gerbig and Megan LeBlanc both added six in the win. States also added five assists, three aces, three digs and three blocks.
Gerbig contributed two assists, three aces, and three digs while LeBlanc had two assists, four aces and nine digs for the ‘Canes. Gracie Ferguson had a match-high 13 assists.
The ‘Canes defeated the Tommies Sunday 3-2 (25-27, 25-20, 25-19, 21-25 and 15-11).
States led the attack with a match-high 22 kills, a career-high for States and the second highest single game total in Hurricanes team history.
LeBlanc added 15 kills, which moves her to within one of Sydney Foy for the Hurricanes women’s volleyball career record. Gerbig added 12 kills for the ‘Canes in the win.
Gracie Ferguson dished out a match-high 49 assists, which is the new single game record for the women’s volleyball Hurricanes.
LeBlanc led the way in digs with 22, while Dana Trainor had 20, Gerbig 13 and States and Ferguson each adding 11.
Gerbig and LeBlanc both had strong games at the service line with four and three aces, respectively.
With the wins, the ‘Canes finish the season in second place with an 18-3 record. The Tommies fall to 15-6 and finish third while the Mounties (8-13) finish fifth.
At this weekend’s ACAA championship, the Hurricanes receive a bye to Saturday’s semifinal at 2 p.m. They will play the highest-seeded winner from Friday’s quarter-final.
Men
In the men’s match Saturday UNBSJ defeated the ‘Canes 3-1 (25-23, 22-25, 25-21, 25-15).
Brett Butler led the Hurricanes attack with 14 kills while Aaron Pugh and Gordon Veitch both had nine kills. Nicholas Menzies had 39 assists while Butler had nine digs.
On Sunday versus the Tommies, the ‘Canes were victorious 3-0 (25-22, 25-23, 25-20).
Butler had 13 kills to lead the way while Veitch added nine and Tyler Lahaise contributed eight.
Menzies picked up 32 assists while the ‘Canes had a strong team defence led by Marcus Lapointe with eight and Menzies with seven.
The ‘Canes (13-2) finish the regular season in first place followed by UNBSJ (9-6) and the Tommies (8-7).
The Hurricanes will take on the Université de Sainte-Anne Dragons (0-15) Saturday at 5 p.m. in the ACAA semifinals in Fredericton, N.B.
