CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. – It’s a pair of rare midweek games for the Holland College Hurricanes as they host the Mount Allison Mounties Thursday.
The women will tip-off at 6 p.m. followed by the men at 8 p.m.
The Hurricanes women (11-4) enter the game in second place in the Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) standings while the Mounties (10-4) are hot on their heels in third place with a game in hand.
These two teams each have a win in the season series with the Mounties claiming the first game 89-63 on Nov. 18 while the Hurricanes were victorious 64-57 on Jan. 28. Both games were played in Sackville, N.B.
With the Mount Saint Vincent Mystics (14-1) firmly in control of first place, the ‘Canes and Mounties are left to battle for the second position and a bye to the semifinals at the conference championships in just over two weeks in Bible Hill, N.S. The third-place team will be forced to play a quarter-final game versus the sixth seed.
The women’s Hurricanes have just three games remaining in their regular season.
Lexi MacInnis leads the ACAA in three-point shooting percentage at 44 per cent while Breauna Rivoli-Johnson leads the way in assists (3.8) and steals (3.5) per game.
The men’s Hurricanes (16-1) are in their usual spot atop the ACAA standings with the Mounties (14-3) are in second. The Hurricanes have won both matchups versus Mount Allison this season by scores of 116-99 and 93-87.
With just four regular season games remaining, the men’s Hurricanes have their sights set on securing the No. 1 seed entering the ACAA championships, which includes a bye to the semifinals.
Roosevelt (Chicken) Whyley leads the ACAA in rebounds per game with 9.9 and total rebounds at 169 while Chase Bowden leads with a field-goal percentage of 63.5 per cent and blocks per game at 1.3. Connor Therrien leads with a three-point shooting percentage of 52.2 per cent.
Last Sunday the men’s and women’s Hurricanes games versus the UNBSJ Seawolves in Saint John were cancelled due to unsafe travel conditions. These games have been rescheduled for Monday, Feb. 19, at 1 and 3 p.m. for the women and men, respectively.
