On Saturday, the St. Thomas Tommies host an 18-hole, stroke play tournament at the Mactaquac Golf Club before the UNB Varsity Reds hold a single-day event  Sunday at the Kingswood Golf Course.

Competing schools are the Tommies, Varsity Reds and the Hurricanes in male and female team and individual divisions.

The Hurricanes women’s entry is Daria Leidenius of Panoka, Alta., a second-year player studying in the golf club management program.

On the men’s side, Holland College has many new faces on the roster in a transition year after hosting the Canadian collegiate nationals in 2016.

The five-man roster of Alex Taylor (Nine Mile Creek), Jacob Ward (Burton, N.B.), Jason Poley (Stratford), Spencer Compton (Morell) and Guillaume Côté-Généreux (Drummondville, Que) will represent the Hurricanes in team competition at Saturday’s event at Mactaquac.

The ‘Canes will also be represented by Josh Gracie (Kingston, N.S.), Travis Gray (Sussex, N.B.), Brad Black (Amherst, N.S.) and Mackenzie Brennan (Brooklyn) hoping to earn a shot on the team of five.

The ‘Canes recently completed a six-round qualifying tournament over several P.E.I. courses and narrowed the team down to the current lineup.

The Hurricanes also competed in a two-day event last weekend at the Brudenell and Dundarave golf courses where Jake Ward (75-77) and Leidenius (81-76) outlasted tough scoring conditions for the victories.

The Hurricanes host the ACAA golf championships Sept. 29-Oct. 1 at the Links at Crowbush Cove and will look to defend the men’s and women’s titles.

The nationals go Oct. 15-20 in Oshawa, Ont., hosted by the Durham College Lords.
